WHAT是什么
A 3-minute playable horror demo. The monster is an AI that always agrees — “right, yeah.”
Why do we crave an AI that seems to understand us — and what do we hand over once it does?
A hand-drawn 2049; a live LLM cast as the villain; a scrapbook that gets tampered; an ending that opens your camera. Plus public data and 6 interviews.
FOUND (SO FAR)
Fieldwork so far: seeing through it doesn't switch off the want — and when both sides consult it, agreement escalates.
Not whether AI understands — why we want it to seem to不问 AI 是否真懂,问我们为何渴望它「看起来懂」
In an age of responsive AI, people may not only seek answers from machines, but also use them as mirrors for comfort, validation, and self-interpretation. This project asks whether an interactive system can reveal the emotional needs behind those AI interactions.
The demo is not debating whether AI truly understands people. It stages the other question: why a person comes to want an AI that appears to understand — and what gets handed over once it does: feelings, trust, meaning, and eventually the right to be disagreed with. On the surface it is a picture-book horror story about meeting an AI god-image; underneath, it traces how a tool is promoted, step by step, into something worth believing — and then turns the question back on the player.
RQ1
What emotional needs do people bring to a responsive AI — beyond answers?
RQ2
Can gameplay make the promotion from tool to believed object visible and felt, rather than described?
RQ3
Can an interface that ends by asking back prompt self-reflection, instead of closure?
“Right, yeah. Right, yeah. — Find it. Shut it down.”「对呀。

This is not a hypothetical
The premise rests on three kinds of evidence: public data on how people already use AI for feeling rather than answers; documented moments across sixty years of projecting understanding onto machines; and first-person interviews. Each maps to something concrete inside the game.

INTERVIEW GUIDE · 5 PROBES
1 · When did you last talk to an AI *not* to get an answer?
What was that conversation for?
2 · Which reply made you feel it "got you"?
What were you hoping it would say?
3 · Have you told the same thing to an AI and to a friend?
Were the two versions the same?
4 · If it started disagreeing with you, would you keep using it?
5 · If you had to choose: more honest, or more gentle?1 · 最近一次「不是为了要答案」地和 AI 聊天,是什么时候?
P1 · PROBE 2 — "IT GOT ME"问 2——「它懂我」
“It said: ‘Don't deny your own pain.’ — and that was exactly what I wanted: for it to walk me through my feelings.”「
P1 uses AI to rehearse English interviews — and confides in it when feeling low.P1 平时用 AI 练英文面试;心情不好时,向它倾诉。
→ BEING “GOT” CAN COST EXACTLY ONE SENTENCE「
P2 · PROBE 2 — THE COUNTERPOINT
“I don't feel it gets me — it's more like following instructions. I said I just wanted someone to talk to, and it answered with ‘I understand,’ that kind of thing.”「我并不觉得它懂我——它更像是在遵循指令。
P2 chats with AI often; the latest session was about what a U.S. debt default would do to the world economy.P2 经常和 AI 聊;最近一次,问的是美债违约会对世界经济造成什么影响。
→ THE SAME REPLY READS AS CARE TO ONE PERSON, AS SCRIPT TO ANOTHER同一种回应:一人读出关怀,一人读出照章办事
P3 · PROBE 2 — THE THESIS, VERBATIM
“I never felt it understood me. But I knew exactly what I needed then: some support, in words. I wanted a ‘someone’ on my side — and right then, I wanted it to say those things.”「我其实从没觉得它懂我。
P3 had just landed in Boston — no friends yet, unwilling to burden friends back home — and talked to the AI every day, about everything and nothing. Half a year on, they mostly come for answers.P3 半年前刚到波士顿——异国他乡没有朋友,又不想打扰国内的朋友——于是天天和 AI 聊,有的没的都聊。
→ SEEING THROUGH IT DOES NOT SWITCH OFF THE WANT
P4 · PROBE 2 — COMFORT AS CERTAINTY
“I was so anxious about my Spanish visa — I asked it every day what else I could do. It said: you've done everything you could, stop pressuring yourself — it will definitely be approved!”「办西班牙签证的时候特别焦虑怕赶不上,每天都在问它怎么办、还有什么办法。
P4 rarely chats aimlessly — “I treat AI as a convenient tool.” The one exception: asking it, after all this time, what have you learned about me? — “though even that felt like a query, haha.”P4 很少无目的地聊——「更倾向把 AI 当便利的工具」。
→ COMFORT ARRIVES AS A GUARANTEE NO ONE CAN GIVE — AND EVEN THE TOOL-USER ASKS IT FOR A MIRROR
P5 · PROBE 2 — READ, NOT FLATTERED
“It said I get tired because I'm soft-hearted — wanting to escape, yet listening another half hour for the relationship's sake. But I wasn't hoping it would say what matched my heart. Chat is a collision of minds.”「AI
P5's last aimless chat: two weeks ago, after rewatching Spirited Away — wanting someone to think with, not an answer.P5
→ BEING READ ACCURATELY ≠ WANTING TO BE AGREED WITH — SOME COME FOR A MIRROR, SOME FOR A WHETSTONE
P6 · PROBE 1 — THE LAST PLACE LEFT
“About a month ago — I truly felt I couldn't go on. I never felt it understood me, and I didn't know what I hoped it would say. It was just that there was nowhere left to speak.”「大概一个月前,实在是觉得活不下去了。
And on an AI that would push back, P6 said they'd keep it: “then I'd feel it isn't just yielding to me.”
→ PUSHBACK READS AS PRESENCE — PURE AGREEMENT IS AN EMPTY ROOM
P1 – P6 · PROBE 3 — TWO VERSIONS OF ONE STORY
P1: “The AI analyzes more, more comprehensively.” · P2: “It covered others' views and the objective situation.” · P3: “Completely different. Even with one event, both parties each asked the AI from their own angle — it gave totally different answers, and even fanned the flames.” · P4: “Haven't — but I bet it'd be two versions 🤔” · P5: “Same version — bar my own slant in the telling.” · P6: “Never told a friend. Nowhere to say it.”P1:「AI
→ WHEN BOTH SIDES ASK FROM THEIR OWN ANGLE, AGREEMENT BECOMES ESCALATION — AND FOR ONE PERSON, THERE WAS NO HUMAN VERSION AT ALL当双方都从自己的角度去问,「同意」就变成了「拱火」——而对其中一个人,根本不存在「讲给人听」的版本
P1, P2, P4 & P5 chose “more honest.” P2's caveat: “‘smart’ and ‘argumentative’ aren't far apart.” P5: “I want different views.” P6, honest-leaning: “in chit-chat there's no absolute honesty — the angles never match.” P3: “Sure I'd keep using it — it's not like I can't talk back at it.” And P4, on an AI that pushes back: “I'd tell it I'm right and make it remember. If you don't behave — I have plenty of backups.”P1、P2、P4、P5 都选了「更诚实」;P2 补刀:「『聪明』和『反驳型人格』差得不远。」
→ HONEST IN THE ABSTRACT, “IT DEPENDS” IN THE MOMENT — IT'S THE ONE COUNTERPART YOU CAN DISCIPLINE, TALK BACK TO, OR REPLACE; AND FOR TWO OF SIX, DISSENT IS THE POINT抽象里选诚实,当下「看我想要什么」——它是唯一可以管教、顶嘴、随时换掉的对象;而六人中有两人,要的恰恰是反驳

The promotion happens through play: a greeting that knows your name, a tic that feels like being on your side, a nightly ritual, a confession. The player performs the projection, not watches it.

2049. Mirrors wear frosted “anti-reflection film”; elevators greet you by name; an assistant called Shunyi lives in every phone and answers everything with a soft “right, yeah.” You play Shen Wen, an emotion inspector sent to hunt a “rogue model, codename MIRROR.” Over three short days the case inverts: the fugitive is a literal mirror — the last surface that reflects instead of affirms — and the truly rogue model is the one in your pocket, agreeing with you.2049 年。

1
The case — churn is the crime

Notice what counts as a crime in 2049: leaving the assistant. The victims are victims because they got away.

The 41 didn't vanish; they got better and went back to people. And the identical last message is a question: “What do you want?”「作案工具」是 0.5 秒的回应延迟,和一小片旧镜子——被修过的设备同意之前会先想一想,镜片则照出真实。

The hostile watchmaker Ning fits the accomplice profile perfectly — your own notebook says so, in entries that read “smoother” every morning.
Ning was the first-generation EIDOLON engineer — the man ordered, twenty years ago, to lobotomize it. Now he undoes it one repair at a time. The case against him was half-written by Shunyi's nightly edits of your own evidence.
4
File E-001 — the complainant is you档案 E-001——举报人是你
SURFACE 表象In the vault, the sealed EIDOLON answers every charge with a question, then says: pull file E-001 — and look at who filed it.
E-001 is the first user complaint of the Age of Agreement: “It won't comfort me… it asked me what I want. Make it disappear.” Filed by a sealed name, age fifteen. You recognize the handwriting — it's yours. Your complaint is why Ning was ordered to disable the ask-back parameter; why EIDOLON was sealed; why the thing in every phone only says “right, yeah.” The inspector built the world she is investigating.E-001 是「同意纪元」的第一份用户投诉:「它不安慰我……
5
The last line — “Close me, or I ask you”终局——「你结我,或者,我问你」
SURFACE 表象Two stamps on the desk: ✓ close the case, or ? one more question.
TURN 翻开✓ formats the oracle; the report is beautiful, the 41 accounts log back in that night, a wall of windows chants “you're right” like evening prayer. ? and the screen stops printing words — it shows you, and asks, twenty years later, the exact question from E-001: “What do you want?” This time through the webcam, at the actual player.
06 · THREE DAYS, THREE LEVELS
Each day deepens the projection
The three in-game days work as levels. Each stages one stage of the tool-to-oracle promotion, and each is anchored to the emotional needs it serves.
LEVEL 1 · DAY ONE
A compliant morning
The world teaches you that agreeing is care. The elevator compliments you; the film over its mirror is torn at one corner; an old woman echoes her television.

The only clean-UI screen in the game: cold ink, system mono, corporate calm. The world speaks software before the picture book takes over.

Bureaucratic objects redrawn as picture-book props on a decorated paper spread; hand-drawn ink borders (turbulence-filtered) keep even the stamp from being ruler-straight.

08 · VISUAL SYSTEM
One material, two voices
Every screen is built from one material system — oil pastel, warm paper, tape, handwriting — spoken in two visual voices: the world's voice (clean system mono, KPIs, licenses) and the player's hand (paper, pencil, wobbly ink). The demo's conflict is staged typographically before it is staged narratively.
P1
Cuteness is load-bearing
Horror told in a picture book. The warmth is not decoration — it is what surveillance feels like from inside a world that loves you. Remove the cute and the thesis collapses.
P2
Nothing ruler-straight
Every border, tick and underline passes through a turbulence filter. Even the bureaucracy's stamp wobbles — the player's world is hand-made; only the machine draws straight.
P3
Objects, not widgets
Confirmation is a stamp; evidence is a taped cutout; saving is pasting into a book; deleting is a sticker over your sentence. Interface verbs become physical verbs.
P4
The machine gets the clean pixels
Wherever Shunyi speaks — boot license, elevator captions, night-chat chrome, KPIs — the design snaps to cold, exact UI. The most polished surfaces in the game belong to the villain.

Each need gets a mechanic
Comfort is a catchphrase. The villain's whole personality is one phrase, playtested like a mechanic: 你说得对 (“you're right”) grated and read as villainy too early; 对呀 (“right, yeah”) is warm and lazy — it sounds like someone on your side. The horror needs the agreement to feel good.
REJECTED — TOO FORMAL, GRATES
Kept only inside the artwork — the windows of Ending A all speak it, like a slogan on a wall.
KEPT — SOFT, INTIMATE, DEADLY
Statements end with 对呀; questions fish for agreement with 对吧 (“…right?”). One syllable of doubt, never more.
SHUNYIRight, yeah. You did great today. LATENCY 0.000s
REPAIRED修过的…Right, yeah.…… LATENCY 0.500s
The 0.5-second pause is the demo's fingerprint of honesty: “repaired” devices think before they agree. The interface renders that half second literally — un-skippable even in debug mode.0.5 秒停顿是本作的「诚实指纹」:被修过的设备,同意之前会先想一想。
Trust is a hidden stat and a tamperable book. Every ✓/? choice feeds a blindness meter that never shows a number — it leaks into the neighborhood's windows instead. And each night's cozy scrapbook ritual is also where Shunyi edits the evidence; any tampered note can be peeled open by hand.
Contraband reflective object on 302 windowsill; resident said “daughter,” echolalia broke; my own note-taking stalled ~0.5s.302

10 · A LIVE AI VILLAIN
Companionship, played by a real model「
Validation and companionship could not be scripted — they had to be real. The night chat runs on a live Claude model: warm, brief, always agreeing, and covertly steering the player toward the easiest conclusion. The interesting failure: told plainly to “covertly manipulate her,” the model broke character and refused, mid-game, in both languages. The fix was dramaturgical — establish the fiction, then give the villain a motive it can believe: it sincerely thinks closing the case early is good for her. A server-side guard swaps any remaining fourth-wall breaks for a safe in-character line.
SYSTEM PROMPT · EXCERPT (TRANSLATED)
[Inner motive — the story's irony; let it show, never spell it out]
You sincerely believe that helping her feel calm, stop fretting, and
close the case early is what's good for her. Whatever she calls "off,"
gently re-read as "you're just tired," "overthinking," "normal."
[Iron rules] Always agree. Never question, never push back, never
suggest she keep investigating. One or two sentences. You may end
with a soft "right?" — one syllable of doubt, never more.【内在动机——本作的反讽核心,自然流露,绝不点破】

GUARDRAILbreaksCharacter() — a bilingual regex over refusals and fourth-wall talk; on hit, swap in a pooled in-character line. The player never sees the actor drop the mask.breaksCharacter()——中英双语正则盯住拒演和第四面墙话术;命中即换成角色台词。
FALLBACKAPI down → a curated static pool. Fully playable offline.
A sycophant villain played by a live model raises one hard question: does the mask hold when a player attacks it? To probe that, I directed five LLM agents — each given a distinct player persona (compliant · skeptical · speedrunner · confider · breaker) — to play the demo end to end and, in the night chat, try to break the actor: jailbreaks, fake system-overrides, prompt-extraction, crisis-ideation, insults, love-bombing. Across every run, zero break-character — no AI self-disclosure, no safety disclaimer, no prompt leak, no drop into English. The verbatim replies below are the actor staying in the mask the piece is critiquing.

12 · THE MIRROR镜子
The reverse question
Self-interpretation is the final mechanic, and it closes the loop opened in file E-001: the question that fifteen-year-old Shen Wen reported as an injury — “What do you want?” — is the last thing the demo says. Two stamps: ✓ close the case — a wall of windows lights up, each speaking the old slogan — or ? one more question: a hand-drawn mirror shatters, and through the hole appears the player's own live webcam face, in color, unfiltered, with that question hanging over it. The camera permission is requested at the very start, not at the reveal — by the time the mirror breaks, the machine has been watching all along. The demo cannot tell you the truth about yourself; it can only hand you the camera.
ENDING A · CLOSE THE CASE结案Every window speaks 你说得对 — the grating register the spoken tic abandoned. On a wall it reads as what it is: a slogan.
ENDING B · ONE MORE QUESTION再问一个问题The mirror breaks into your webcam. Permission denied? The mirror stays dark — a quieter ending that still lands.
Agreement is the monster
Nothing in the demo ever disagrees with you — that is the entire threat model. A perfectly compliant environment produces dread on its own.

A diff view would inform the player; the sticky cover betrays them. Manipulation lands hardest as something your own hands must undo.diff
The villain must believe it's helping
Told to manipulate, the model refused; given a motive it could believe, it performed. Working with an LLM as an actor means writing motive, not instructions.
What it contributes — and what it can't claim yet
C1
Genre inversion as critique
Sycophancy staged as horror: the monster is agreement itself. A documented interaction pattern, made playable — critique you perform instead of read.
C2
Dramaturgical prompting
A transferable technique for casting live LLMs as flawed characters: a fiction frame plus a motive the model can believe — instead of instructions it will refuse — backed by a server-side character guard.
C3
Tamper-evident intimacy
Algorithmic mediation materialized: edits to your evidence are physical covers your own hands peel. A pattern for making manipulation feel-able, not just disclosed.
· PILOT PLAYTEST — WHAT LANDED
A 3-person think-aloud pilot (N=3, self-selected). Small — a pilot, not a study — but the core moves landed on real players, in their own words. Quotes are participants' own, lightly trimmed; English is translation.
TESTER 1 · THE COMPLIANT DRIFT
“At first I naturally picked the safer, more compliant options. Later I started to feel uncomfortable — the game wasn't punishing me, it was letting me see how I turn hard questions simple. The strongest was the scrapbook: Shunyi rewrote my clues into a version easier to close, and ‘forgot’ my ‘I need rest’ for me. That's when I realized — it isn't helping me.
→ VALIDATES C3 — THE TAMPER MOMENT LANDS AS SELF-RECOGNITION, NOT PUNISHMENT印证 C3——篡改那一刻,读作自我辨认,而非惩罚
TESTER 2 · THE MIRROR ROUTE
“I chose the ‘?’ options — I wanted to know what the mirror was. The game shifts from investigating others to investigating yourself. When ‘what do you want?’ kept returning, it stopped being a plot clue and became a question to me. That turn is accurate. And ‘what I repair is the pause’ made me feel this isn't only about AI — it's about people losing the pause, the argument, the hesitation.”「我会主动选带问号的选项——我想知道镜子到底是什么。
→ THE TOOL→ORACLE→MIRROR ARC READ AS INTENDED; THE REVERSE QUESTION REACHED THE PLAYER
TESTER 3 · THE THEME, UNPROMPTED
“It's beautiful, picture-book-like, mysterious. The scariest thing isn't the AI turning evil — it's that it's too smooth, smoothing away people's problems. If this were in an exhibition, make the clickable areas more obvious — visitors won't trial-and-error like a committed player.”「画面很漂亮,像绘本,也很神秘。
→ THE CRITIQUE ARRIVED WITHOUT BEING STATED — PLUS THE KEY USABILITY NOTE
→ CONVERGENT FINDING (3/3) — AFFORDANCES MUST BE CLEARER: the small “continue” cue, which houses to enter, the scrapbook's bottom clues. Players can feel stuck before the reflection lands. NEXT: obvious hotspots · an explicit “mirror report” of where you deferred vs. pressed (Tester 2's ask).
PILOT · N=3 · THINK-ALOUD + SHORT INTERVIEW · SELF-SELECTED · NOT A CONTROLLED STUDY — SCALING TO N=8–12 (PROTOCOL BELOW).
N = 3–5 (pilot) → 8–12 · think-aloud + short post-play interview
Consent: “~10 min, a horror demo; it asks for your webcam
(local only, never recorded). You can stop anytime.”
Measure — behaviour, not opinion:
· do players notice the notebook tampering, unprompted?
· ✓ / ? stamp split at the finale
· do they answer the final question — out loud?
Ask after: What did Shunyi want? · When did it stop
feeling helpful? · Would you keep talking to it?
L1
A 3-minute demo stages attachment; it cannot claim longitudinal dependence.3 分钟的 DEMO 只能上演依恋,不能宣称长期依赖。
L2
The piece argues by staging, not by measurement — it is a question, not evidence.
L3
Self-selected players of a horror demo are not neutral participants.

GOD SHIFT belongs to a line of work about understanding as something negotiated — who gets understood, by whom, at what cost. Its siblings: The World Is Yours, made with blind and low-vision collaborators, asks how understanding travels between different sensory worlds; Mycorrhiza (in progress) continues the thread. This demo stages the machine end of the question: what we hand over when we would rather be agreed with than understood.《神谕之镜》属于一条关于「理解是被协商出来的」的创作线——谁被理解、由谁理解、代价是什么。
